The system, described in a paper posted on the preprint server ArXiv in late October, identifies objects and people in trailers and uses that data to suggest films with similar visual elements to potential viewers.
For example, a blog post detailing the algorithm's functionality shows how it processed the trailer for the X-Men film "Logan." The system picked up labels such as "tree," "facial hair," "car," and "man," leading it to recommend "The Revenant" as a visually similar movie, likely due to shared outdoor and rugged aesthetic cues.
However, as The Verge pointed out, the algorithm missed connections that might seem obvious to a human observer. It failed to link "Logan" with "Ant-Man" or "Deadpool," both of which also subvert typical superhero tropes. This highlights a key limitation: the system relies on surface-level visual features rather than narrative or thematic understanding.
AI's Expanding Role in Hollywood
The entertainment industry is increasingly turning to artificial intelligence for various tasks, from recommending scripts to generating special effects. Fox's trailer-analysis tool is part of this broader trend, but its practical utility remains unclear. The algorithm could potentially help marketing teams tailor advertisements to specific demographics once a trailer is produced, but it is difficult to see how an image-detection system could outperform humans who can grasp deeper narrative connections.
Despite these limitations, the technology represents an interesting step in the ongoing integration of AI into creative industries. Whether it will become a standard tool in film marketing or remain an experimental novelty is yet to be seen.
