They focused on responses from 2010 and 2014, covering 162 randomly selected counties across China. Lead researcher Xi Chen, speaking to The Guardian, described the impact as "huge," noting that polluted air can effectively reduce everyone's education level by one year. However, the effect is more severe for certain groups. "We know the effect is worse for the elderly, especially those over 64, and for men, and for those with low education," Chen said. "If we calculate [the loss] for those, it may be a few years of education."
