When the Sun eventually exhausts its fuel and expands into a red giant, Earth will become uninhabitable. But a new study suggests that the last living things on our planet could be tardigrades—microscopic, eight-legged creatures that have earned the nickname "water bears" for their pudgy, bear-like appearance under a microscope.
Researchers from the University of Oxford and Harvard University published findings in the journal Nature that examined whether these hardy animals could withstand the kinds of catastrophic events that would wipe out most other life forms. The team, led by David Sloan, modeled the effects of asteroid impacts, gamma-ray bursts, and supernovae—the explosive deaths of stars.
"To our surprise we found that although nearby supernovae or large asteroid impacts would be catastrophic for people, tardigrades could be unaffected," Sloan said in a Harvard press release. "Therefore it seems that life, once it gets going, is hard to wipe out entirely."
Tardigrades are known as extremophiles because they thrive in conditions that would be lethal to most organisms. They prefer moist habitats, such as the sediment at the bottom of lakes, but they can survive extreme temperatures, high levels of radiation, intense pressure, and even the vacuum of space for short periods. Their ability to enter a cryptobiotic state—suspending their metabolism—allows them to endure these harsh conditions.

The implications of this research extend far beyond the fate of water bears. With the discovery of the TRAPPIST-1 system, ongoing challenges in the search for life on Mars, and the potential for life on Saturn's moon Titan, understanding extremophiles is crucial for astrobiology. By learning the limits of life on Earth, scientists can better target their search for life elsewhere in the cosmos.
If life can survive the most extreme events our universe can throw at it, then the odds of finding microbial life on other planets may be higher than previously thought. The study underscores the resilience of life, suggesting that once it takes hold, it is remarkably difficult to eradicate.
